Reinstall a printer driver safely

Printing stopped after an update, or you see garbled output? Removing and re-adding the printer usually fixes driver problems.

Start with the built-in driver

  1. Remove the printer from your computer (Windows: Printers & scanners › select printer › Remove; Mac: Printers & Scanners › minus button).
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Add the printer again. Windows and macOS include drivers for many models and will often choose a working one automatically.
  4. Print a test page.

If you need the manufacturer's software

  • Download it only from the manufacturer's official website, for your exact model and operating system version.
  • Avoid “driver update” tools and third-party download sites.
  • Restart after installing.

Duplicate printers

If you see the same printer listed more than once (for example “Copy 1”), remove the extra entries so documents don't go to a stale one.
